Akaunting

Double-entry accounting software for small businesses and freelancers

9.9k PHP BUSL-1.1 today

Overview

Akaunting is a PHP/Laravel web accounting application offering invoicing, expense tracking, double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, and multi-currency support. It supports multiple companies, tax management, and a marketplace of paid and free modules (payroll, inventory, etc.). It deploys on any LAMP stack or via Docker. The core is free; advanced modules are commercial.

Where it falls short of QuickBooks

  • Many useful features (payroll, advanced inventory) locked behind paid marketplace modules
  • BUSL-1.1 license restricts SaaS redistribution without a commercial agreement
  • Bank sync and open-banking connections require paid add-ons or manual CSV import
  • Reporting and dashboard customisation is less flexible than QuickBooks Online

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
