SilverBullet

Extensible hacker-friendly Markdown knowledge base with offline-first sync

5.5k Docker MIT 2 days ago

Overview

SilverBullet is a self-hosted, offline-capable Markdown note-taking app designed for power users who want a programmable personal knowledge base. It features a slash-command-driven interface, Live Queries that pull data dynamically from your notes, and a Plug system for extending functionality with JavaScript. Notes are plain Markdown files on disk, making them portable and git-friendly. Deployment is a single Docker image or a Deno binary with no external database required.

Where it falls short of Obsidian

  • No native mobile apps; mobile use relies on the web interface
  • Real-time multi-user collaboration is limited compared to cloud-first tools
  • Plugin ecosystem is much smaller than Obsidian's community plugin library
  • No built-in rich media embedding or database views comparable to Notion

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
