Overview
AppFlowy is an open-source alternative to Notion offering docs, wikis, kanban boards, and databases with a focus on data ownership and privacy. The core is built in Rust with a Flutter UI, giving native desktop and mobile apps. It can run fully offline/local or be self-hosted with AppFlowy Cloud for collaboration.
Key features
- Documents, wikis, kanban boards, and databases in one workspace
- Rust core with a Flutter UI for native desktop and mobile apps
- Fully offline/local-first operation with no server required
- Optional self-hosted AppFlowy Cloud for sync and collaboration
- Data ownership and privacy as a primary design goal
Our take
AppFlowy is the most credible open-source Notion alternative, and the Rust-plus-Flutter architecture gives it genuine native apps across desktop and mobile rather than just a web wrapper. The local-first model is its strongest selling point: you can run it entirely offline with no server, and reach for self-hosted AppFlowy Cloud only when you need collaboration or sync. Feature parity with Notion is still a moving target, so power users leaning on advanced database formulas, deep integrations, or large shared workspaces may hit gaps. Note also that it's AGPL-3.0, which matters if you plan to embed or redistribute it, but for personal and team note-taking the deploy story is reasonable at a 3/5 difficulty.
Ideal for: Individuals and small teams who want a Notion-style workspace they can run locally or self-host without handing data to a SaaS vendor.
Where it falls short of Notion
- Self-hosted AppFlowy Cloud setup is involved and less polished than the local desktop app.
- Fewer database view types and formula capabilities than Notion.
- Limited third-party integrations and public API.
- Real-time multiplayer collaboration is newer and less battle-tested.
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
