Memos

Lightweight, self-hosted note-taking and memo hub

40k Go MIT 7 days ago

Overview

Memos is a lightweight, privacy-first, open-source note-taking service for quick notes, thoughts, and memos with Markdown support. It is written in Go with a single-binary or Docker deployment and a clean, fast UI. It works well as a self-hosted, microblog-style alternative for capturing knowledge.

Key features

  • Quick capture of notes, thoughts, and memos
  • Markdown support for formatting
  • Microblog-style timeline UI
  • Single binary or Docker deployment
  • Self-hosted, privacy-first storage of your own data

Our take

Memos nails the lightweight, privacy-first niche: it is a single Go binary (or Docker) with a clean, fast UI built around quickly jotting short, Markdown-formatted notes in a microblog-style timeline. Deployment is trivial and there is little to maintain, which makes it a pleasant always-on scratchpad you fully own. The caveat is that it is intentionally minimal, so anyone expecting Notion- or Evernote-grade features like rich document hierarchies, databases, or heavy collaboration will find it spartan by design. It is also self-host only with no managed option here, so backups of its store are on you. Taken for what it is, a focused capture tool, it is excellent.

Ideal for: Individuals who want a fast, self-hosted, microblog-style scratchpad for short notes rather than a full document workspace.

Where it falls short of Evernote

  • Designed for short notes/memos, not long structured documents or wikis.
  • No nested page hierarchy, databases, or board views.
  • No real-time collaboration.
  • Limited rich formatting compared to block editors.

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
