Overview
MediaWiki is the open-source PHP wiki software that powers Wikipedia and thousands of other wikis worldwide. It provides wikitext editing, version history, category trees, templates, and an extensive extension ecosystem. Deployable as a Docker container or traditional LAMP stack, it scales from personal wikis to billion-page encyclopedias.
Where it falls short of Confluence
- Wikitext markup is unfamiliar to most users; modern WYSIWYG editing via VisualEditor requires extra setup
- No built-in real-time collaboration; concurrent edits require manual conflict resolution
- No native mobile editor app; mobile experience is read-optimised only
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
