Keila
Open-source newsletter tool, an easy Mailchimp alternative in Elixir
Overview
Keila is an open-source newsletter tool written in Elixir/Phoenix for managing contacts, building sign-up forms, and sending campaigns. It supports SMTP plus AWS SES, Sendgrid, Mailgun, and Postmark as sending backends. It focuses on simplicity and privacy as a self-hosted Mailchimp alternative. An official hosted version is available at app.keila.io.
Where it falls short of Mailchimp
- Smaller feature set than Mailchimp — limited automation/journeys
- Fewer template and design tools out of the box
- Smaller community and ecosystem of integrations
- No built-in deliverability/IP warmup; relies on external senders
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
