listmonk

High-performance self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager

17k Go AGPL-3.0 14 days ago

Overview

listmonk is a standalone, self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager built as a single Go binary backed by PostgreSQL. It offers a modern dashboard, granular subscriber management, multi-list campaigns, templating, and a fast bulk-sending engine. It supports transactional email APIs and connects to any SMTP provider or services like SES. It is one of the most popular open-source Mailchimp alternatives.

Key features

  • Manages newsletters and mailing lists with multi-list, segmented campaigns
  • Single Go binary backed by PostgreSQL for simple deployment
  • Bulk-sending engine tuned for high throughput
  • Subscriber management with granular querying and segmentation
  • Campaign templating and a web dashboard
  • Transactional email API and pluggable SMTP, including services like SES

Our take

listmonk is refreshingly lean: a single Go binary plus PostgreSQL, a clean dashboard, and a bulk sender that genuinely moves, which is why it's among the most popular open-source Mailchimp replacements. It deliberately handles list management and campaigns but leaves actual delivery to whatever SMTP provider or SES you plug in, so it does not solve deliverability for you — you'll still need a sending setup that reaches inboxes. Compared to hosted services you also give up the polished onboarding, prebuilt automations, and template galleries, trading them for control and a much lower cost at scale. It's self-host only and AGPL-3.0, so factor the license in if you're embedding it in a commercial network service. For straightforward newsletters and list management on your own infrastructure, it's an easy recommendation.

Ideal for: Self-hosters and small teams who want a fast, no-frills Mailchimp alternative and are happy to bring their own SMTP provider.

Where it falls short of Mailchimp

  • No built-in marketing automation/journey builder like Mailchimp
  • No bundled deliverability/IP reputation management — you supply your own SMTP/SES
  • No native landing page or e-commerce/CRM integrations
  • Reporting and analytics are basic compared to commercial suites

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
