Plain-text double-entry accounting in your terminal with powerful reporting and web UI

4.6k Haskell GPL-3.0 3 days ago

Overview

hledger is a cross-platform, plain-text accounting tool compatible with the Ledger format. Finances are stored in human-readable text files under version control, and the tool provides CLI commands, a terminal UI, and a self-hosted web UI (hledger-web) for viewing reports. It supports multi-currency accounting, budget tracking, and CSV import from bank exports.

Where it falls short of Mint

  • Plain-text workflow requires manual transaction entry or custom import scripts
  • No native bank sync/Open Banking integration
  • Web UI is read-only; edits must be made in text files

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
