CryptPad
Encrypted, real-time collaborative office suite you can self-host
Overview
CryptPad is a fully encrypted, real-time collaborative office suite including rich text documents, spreadsheets, code pads, whiteboards, and forms — all with zero-knowledge encryption. The Node.js server can be deployed via Docker or manually, and the hosted version at cryptpad.fr is operated by the developers. Data is encrypted client-side before hitting the server.
Where it falls short of Notion
- Real-time performance degrades noticeably with large documents or many simultaneous editors
- No native mobile apps; browser-only experience on phones is suboptimal
- Admin management UI is rudimentary compared to Confluence or Google Workspace admin consoles
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
