WorkAdventure
Virtual office and conference as an interactive 16-bit RPG world in the browser
Overview
WorkAdventure is an open-source virtual office and event platform where participants navigate a 2D retro RPG map in their browser, triggering video/audio conversations when avatars approach each other using Jitsi Meet. It supports custom Tiled-editor maps, integrated web applications via iframes, and persistent rooms, making it suitable for remote teams, online events, and virtual conferences. Deployment requires Docker Compose with multiple services.
Where it falls short of Slack
- Self-hosting requires managing 6+ Docker services (pusher, back, front, map-storage, Jitsi, etc.) with non-trivial coordination.
- Not a general-purpose team chat tool; lacks threaded messaging, async communication, and integrations found in Slack.
- Video quality and reliability depend on the separately self-hosted Jitsi instance.
- Map creation requires proficiency with the Tiled map editor; onboarding is steep for non-technical teams.
