Our take
Uptime Kuma is the easy recommendation for self-hosted uptime monitoring: a single Docker container gets you a polished real-time dashboard, dozens of check types, and 90+ notification integrations with almost no configuration. The status pages are clean enough to put in front of customers, and the whole thing is MIT-licensed and genuinely pleasant to use. The main caveat is that it is fundamentally a single-node tool built around an embedded database, so it doesn't cluster or scale horizontally, and monitoring your infrastructure from the same box that might go down is an obvious blind spot, run it somewhere external. It also lacks the deeper SLA reporting and multi-region probing of commercial offerings. For the overwhelming majority of homelabs and small businesses, none of that matters and it just works.
Ideal for: Individuals and small teams who want clean uptime monitoring and a public status page without paying for UptimeRobot or Statuspage.
Where it falls short of UptimeRobot
- Single-node by design; no built-in multi-region / global probe network like Pingdom or UptimeRobot Pro
- Status pages are simpler than Statuspage.io (limited custom domains UX, no subscriber-tier management, fewer branding controls)
- No SLA reporting/analytics depth or team RBAC found in commercial offerings
- Scaling to thousands of monitors can strain the single SQLite/MariaDB backend
