Overview
Squidex is an open-source headless CMS written in .NET that uses MongoDB as its storage backend and implements CQRS with event sourcing for a full audit history. It provides a schema editor, REST and GraphQL APIs, asset management, role-based access control, and multi-language content. A cloud-hosted version is available. Deploy via Docker Compose with MongoDB.
Where it falls short of Contentful
- MongoDB dependency increases operational complexity vs. SQL-based headless CMSes
- .NET stack means fewer hosting providers with native support compared to Node/PHP tools
- UI and developer experience are less polished than Contentful or Sanity
- Plugin/extension ecosystem is minimal; most customization requires code changes
