700 Lua Apache-2.0 1 month ago

Overview

Snikket is a self-hosted instant messaging platform built on the XMPP standard, designed to make setting up a private family or team messenger as simple as possible. It bundles Prosody XMPP server with a curated set of modules and provides polished iOS and Android apps. Invitations, automatic TLS, and push notifications are handled out of the box.

Where it falls short of Slack

  • No public channels or community servers; designed for private groups only
  • Federation with other XMPP servers has occasional compatibility edge cases
  • Limited bot or integration support compared to Slack or Matrix

We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
