Overview
Selfoss is a web-based RSS/Atom feed reader and content aggregator that can pull in live streams from social networks, news sites, and custom sources via plugins. It features a responsive UI, tagging, search, read/unread tracking, and a REST API for third-party clients. Deployed as a PHP application, it requires only a web server with PHP and a supported database (SQLite, MySQL, or PostgreSQL).
Where it falls short of Feedly
- No built-in article text extraction or offline read-later saving
- UI is dated compared to modern readers like Feedly; mobile experience is limited
- No native mobile apps; relies on third-party clients via API
- Social source plugins (Twitter/X, etc.) are fragile due to API changes
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
