Open-WebUI
Feature-rich self-hosted chat UI for Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs
Overview
Open-WebUI is a polished browser-based interface for interacting with LLMs through Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible backend. It supports multi-user accounts, conversation history, document RAG, image generation, web search, and plugin tools. The interface closely mirrors ChatGPT's UX, making migration straightforward. It ships as a single Docker image and can be deployed with one command.
Where it falls short of ChatGPT
- Advanced reasoning models and GPT-4o-level capabilities depend entirely on the underlying model quality
- No native mobile app; browser-only experience
- Enterprise SSO/SAML and audit logging require additional configuration
- Plugin/tool ecosystem is smaller and less mature than ChatGPT's GPT store
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
