Mumble
Low-latency, high-quality open-source voice and text chat for gaming and teams
Overview
Mumble is a mature, low-latency voice over IP and text chat application optimized for real-time group voice communication. It features strong end-to-end encryption via TLS/DTLS, hierarchical channel structures, permission management, and a plugin system for positional audio in games. The server component (Murmur) is cross-platform and deployable as a standalone binary with minimal dependencies.
Where it falls short of Slack
- Desktop client only; no official mobile apps with full feature parity (third-party clients exist but are limited).
- No text channel persistence, message history search, or file sharing beyond basic in-channel text.
- UI is dated and less polished compared to Discord or Teams.
- No video calling, screen sharing, or integrations with productivity tools.
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
