HedgeDoc
Realtime collaborative Markdown editor and notes platform for teams
Overview
HedgeDoc (formerly CodiMD / HackMD CE) is a self-hosted, real-time collaborative Markdown editor that works in any modern browser. Multiple users can edit the same document simultaneously with live previews, and documents can be published or shared with fine-grained permissions. It supports a wide set of Markdown extensions including diagrams (Mermaid, PlantUML), math (MathJax), and presentation slides. Deployment is straightforward via Docker Compose with PostgreSQL or MySQL.
Where it falls short of Notion
- Limited to Markdown; no rich block-based editing (tables, databases) like Notion
- No built-in task management, kanban boards, or project organization features
- Lacks a hierarchical page tree or wiki-style organization found in Confluence
- No native mobile apps; browser-only experience on mobile
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
