Overview
GitBucket is a Git platform built with Scala that aims for GitHub API compatibility, allowing existing GitHub-compatible tools and webhooks to work out of the box. It provides repositories, pull requests, issues, wikis, and a plugin system for extensibility. It runs on the JVM as a single WAR file, deployable to any servlet container or as a standalone JAR.
Where it falls short of Jira
- No native CI/CD system; requires external integration
- JVM runtime adds memory overhead compared to Go-based alternatives
- Package/container registry is not built in
- Advanced project management views (kanban, roadmaps) require plugins
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
