Overview
Plane is an open-source project management tool for tracking issues, running sprint cycles, and managing product roadmaps. It offers issues, cycles, modules, a spreadsheet view, kanban boards, and a wiki-style pages feature. It targets teams that want a Jira/Linear-style experience they can self-host.
Key features
- Issue tracking with kanban boards and spreadsheet-style views
- Sprint cycles and modules for scoping work
- Product roadmap management
- Wiki-style pages feature
- Deployable via Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, or manually
Our take
Plane covers the project-management essentials a Jira or Linear refugee expects — issues, cycles, modules, kanban and spreadsheet views, plus wiki-style pages — and offers the full range of deployment options from Docker Compose up to Kubernetes. It's AGPL-3.0 and self-hostable with a managed option if you'd rather not run it, which gives you an exit either way. The caveat for self-hosters is that it's a relatively young, fast-moving product, so expect feature gaps and more frequent updates than a mature incumbent. It's a multi-service stack rather than a single binary, so plan for a bit more operational care than the 3/5 difficulty might suggest at first glance.
Ideal for: Teams that want a self-hosted Jira or Linear alternative with sprints, roadmaps, and built-in docs in one place.
Where it falls short of Jira
- Some advanced features (e.g. certain enterprise workflows, intake, advanced analytics) are gated behind the paid Pro/Enterprise tiers
- Self-hosted community edition lags behind the cloud version on newer features
- Automation rules are far less mature than Jira's
- Mobile apps are less polished than Linear's
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
