Overview
FreeScout is a lightweight, free, self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox built on Laravel. It turns shared email inboxes into collaborative support queues with assignments, notes, tags, and saved replies, and extends via paid modules (live chat, knowledge base, telephony, etc.). It runs on modest shared hosting, making it accessible to small teams replacing Zendesk or Help Scout.
Where it falls short of Zendesk
- Many key capabilities (live chat, knowledge base, automations) require paid first-party modules
- Core is email/shared-inbox focused, not truly omnichannel out of the box
- Reporting/analytics are basic compared to Zendesk
- No official managed cloud hosting from the project
