Docuseal
Self-hosted digital document signing platform — open-source DocuSign alternative
Overview
Docuseal allows you to create fillable PDF templates with signature, initials, text, checkbox, and date fields, then send them to signers via email or an embedded link. Signers complete documents in the browser with no account required. The platform tracks completion status, stores signed documents, and sends automated notifications. It deploys as a single Docker container backed by SQLite or PostgreSQL and supports SMTP configuration for email delivery.
Where it falls short of Notion
- Advanced workflow automations (conditional fields, branching) are limited compared to DocuSign.
- No built-in identity verification (ID check, knowledge-based auth) for high-assurance signing.
- Bulk-send to large lists and advanced reporting are cloud-plan features only.
- Audit trail is basic; lacks the legally certified audit certificates that DocuSign provides.
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
