Checkmk
Enterprise-grade infrastructure monitoring for servers, networks, and cloud
Overview
Checkmk is a mature open-source IT monitoring system with auto-discovery, agent-based and agentless checks, and a built-in web UI. The Raw edition (fully open-source) covers server health, network devices, cloud services, and applications out of the box with over 2,000 check plugins. It is a strong self-hosted alternative to Zabbix with a more modern interface.
Where it falls short of Datadog
- Raw (open-source) edition lacks distributed monitoring available in commercial tiers
- Setup requires agent installation on monitored hosts
- Steeper initial configuration compared to lighter tools like Gatus
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
