Overview
Spacebar (formerly Fosscord) is a free, open-source, self-hostable reimplementation of the Discord backend that remains compatible with existing Discord clients, bots, and applications. It lets communities run their own Discord-like servers with full data ownership. Still in active development and aimed at hobbyists and self-hosting enthusiasts.
Where it falls short of Discord
- Still alpha/beta quality; not feature-complete or stable for production communities
- Voice/video support is incomplete or experimental
- Documentation and setup are rough and aimed at technical users
- No official polished first-party client; relies on Discord-compatible clients
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
