Overview
Sigal is a Python-based static site generator specifically for photo and video galleries. You point it at a directory of images, it generates a complete static HTML gallery with thumbnails, Colorbox lightbox, and optional video support via ffmpeg. The result is a zero-maintenance, CDN-friendly gallery with no server-side runtime required.
Where it falls short of Google Photos
- Static output only; no user uploads, comments, or sharing features
- No face recognition or metadata-based organization
- Requires rebuilding and redeploying when adding new photos
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
