Pimcore
Open-source platform for PIM, CMS, DAM, and e-commerce
Overview
Pimcore is an enterprise-grade open-source platform combining Product Information Management (PIM), Digital Asset Management (DAM), a CMS, and an e-commerce framework in a single PHP application. It uses a flexible object model to manage any data structure, provides multi-channel publishing, and exposes REST/GraphQL APIs. Pimcore targets mid-to-large companies needing a unified commerce and content hub. Self-host on a LAMP stack with Docker Compose.
Where it falls short of Contentful
- Very steep learning curve; configuration and customization require substantial PHP expertise
- Core is open-source but many enterprise modules (e-commerce, portals) are commercially licensed
- Hosting requirements are heavy: Redis, Elasticsearch, and MySQL all needed for production
- Documentation can lag behind releases, especially for newer headless API features
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
