Overview
Nginx Proxy Manager is a Docker-based tool that provides a simple web interface for managing Nginx reverse proxy configurations. It supports automatic Let's Encrypt SSL certificate provisioning, access lists, redirections, and custom Nginx configurations. The interface allows non-technical users to expose local services over the internet without writing raw Nginx config files. Deploys as a Docker Compose stack with a bundled SQLite or MySQL database.
Where it falls short of Heroku
- No built-in application deployment or build pipelines
- Lacks advanced traffic management features like rate limiting, circuit breaking, or canary deployments
- No native support for multi-node clustering or high availability
- Monitoring and logging capabilities are minimal compared to managed platforms
We list the gaps honestly so you can decide if the trade-off is worth owning your data.
