Nextcloud Memories
Fast modern photo management suite running as a Nextcloud app
Overview
Nextcloud Memories is a high-performance photo and video management application that runs as a plugin within a Nextcloud instance. It provides a Google Photos-like timeline UI, face recognition, EXIF-based maps, albums, people clustering, and hardware-accelerated video transcoding. Requires an existing Nextcloud deployment and benefits from a high-performance backend (HPOP) for large libraries.
Where it falls short of Google Photos
- Requires a full Nextcloud installation as a prerequisite; cannot be deployed standalone
- Face recognition depends on the separate Recognize or Face Recognition Nextcloud apps, adding complexity
- Hardware video transcoding requires manual ffmpeg and VA-API/NVENC configuration
- Performance at scale depends heavily on Nextcloud database tuning and the optional HPOP binary
